Artist Profile

Ashesh Rai is a musician based in Kathamandu. Learning Tabla as his first instrument from his grandfather Ram Hari Gurung.

Ashesh started music formally at young age of 7. He soon started venturing into playing other musical instruments along his teenage years. Guitar, mandolin, violin, congas, drums, kanjira, murchunga, Nepali Indigenous Percussions are among the many instruments Ashesh has learnt over his musical career.

Apart from playing live instruments, Ashesh also produces electronic music. To express the variety of sonic textures, Ashesh has been involved in many projects in and around the city of Kathmandu.

His musical directions are cross-generic and range from folk to classical to jazz and beyond. However, he best identifies himself as a genre-independent musician.
